We are confident this initiative will enhance professional certifications in our industry, reflecting his passion and contributions.

About Dr. Dennis C. Bausman: A Journey of Dedication

Dr. Dennis C. Bausman was born on June 8, 1949, in Hampton, Iowa. He demonstrated academic excellence early, graduating from Ackley High School, and later earning degrees from Iowa State University, Clemson University, and Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Dr. Bausman received his Baccalaureate Degree in Construction Engineering from Iowa State, his Master’s Degree in Construction Science and Management from Clemson, and his Ph.D. in Construction Management from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.

Dr. Bausman’s career began in the commercial construction industry, where he spent 28 years as a construction management executive before transitioning to academia. He then spent 24 years in the Department of Construction Science and Management at Clemson University in South Carolina as a construction management educator.

An Impactful Educator

Dr. Bausman was a very effective teacher and researcher, as evidenced by the many national, regional, and local industry and academic awards he received, including the 2002 Clemson University Alumni Teaching Award.

Dr. Bausman dedicated himself to improving the image of the construction industry, especially the role of the construction process (constructor) among his students and those he engaged with – both within and outside the construction industry.

He was a Fellow in the American Institute of Constructors (AIC). He also served in various leadership roles on the AIC’s Constructor Certification Commission as a Certified Professional Constructor (CPC), including serving as Chair of the Commission for many years.

Dr. Bausman credits his highly impactful relationship with Dr. Roger Liska, Chair Emeritus of the Construction Management Program at Clemson University.  Roger’s influence on coaching Dennis’ conversion from industry to the academic world of building tomorrow’s constructors was highly influential on Dennis’ career and style. Dennis was very grateful for the friendship and example of continuous leadership well past Roger’s retirement. This award grew from the seed of their collaboration and friendship.

The Purpose of the Endowment: Supporting Excellence in Construction Education

The Dr. Dennis C. Bausman National Construction Education Program Certification Award will annually recognize and reward construction education programs, faculty, and students who uphold high ethical standards and actively participate in constructor certification-related activities.

Some opportunities for recognition include serving as certification examination sites, preparing students to take the CAC Level I examination, and other faculty and student-led initiatives that promote constructor ethics and certification, such as participating in the AIC National Ethics Competition.

Ultimately, this award aims to encourage the pursuit of the CAC Level I certification and Certified Professional Constructor (CPC) Level II certification, reinforcing the professional credibility of the construction industry.

The AIC Education Foundation will soon announce the application and selection criteria for the National Award.

How to Contribute: Enhancing the Value of the Endowment

The annual interest generated from the endowment will be used to provide a monetary stipend as part of the award. This financial support aims to inspire and motivate future generations of construction professionals to achieve certification and uphold the high standards set by Dr. Bausman.

The AIC Education Foundation is now accepting donations to further increase the value of the endowment. Contributions, regardless of size, are greatly appreciated and will help perpetuate Dr. Bausman’s legacy. Tax-deductible donations can be sent to:
